Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood; which averages out to about 4.5 million patients in a need of blood transfusions each year. 43,000 pints of donated blood are used each day and one pint of blood could save three lives. Blood donations are used for a number of reasons, not just blood transfusions, including: organ transplants (heart, liver, lung, etc.), cancer patients (especially children), and premature infants. These are just a few facts to show the importance of blood donating.
I am an employee at Virginia Blood Services. I work in the telerecruitment department and our job is to call donors to let them know they are eligible, set up appointments and to inform them on any important needs. We have locations all over the state including Richmond, Chester, Charlottesville, and Harrisonburg. I have created this blog to inform people on the importance of donating blood and hopefully some will become donors! Our goal is to meet the demands of local hospitals to ensure that there is enough blood for any situation that may arrise. Without our donors we cannot meet these expectations, and if we cannot supply the hospitals, we cannot save lives. Many people do not realize how important it is to give blood and hopefully over the next few weeks I can change some minds.
